Wilmslow is perfectly located for residents to enjoy the countryside without having to jump in their cars first.

The two river valleys of the Bollin and the Dean define much of our landscape character and present excellent opportunities to get out and about. ‘Wilmslow Countryside: A Landscape Character Assessment’ (below) highlights the landscape character you will encounter as you walk in the countryside immediately beyond the urban area.

Below is also a walking map, produced by Wilmslow Trust, highlighting sites of interest in Wilmslow town centre.

Beyond the town centre, Lindow Moss is one of the largest lowland peatlands in Cheshire. In 1984 Lindow Moss came to international prominence with the discovery of an almost intact Iron Age bog body – Lindow Man. This is said to be one of the most visited exhibits in the British Museum. “Lindow Moss is a unique home to a variety of peatland habitats – a large area of peat bog mixed with wet heath, fen, oak-birch woodland, open water pools and ditches. Despite years of drainage and peat cutting, Lindow Moss remains built on a substantial volume of peat, several metres deep in places, giving rise to the unusual waterlogged, acidic conditions characteristic of healthy peatlands, key to supporting a unique assemblage of plant species” (taken from the Discover Lindow website).

The history and heritage of Lindow Moss can be explored through a 3.5 – mile Heritage trail around Lindow Common and Lindow Moss.
